Advent Prayer Service

The 6th grade class will lead an Advent Prayer Service on Monday, December 20th at 8:30 AM. All are invited to come and participate in the prayer service.

HCA Advent Folder

Holy Childhood Advent folders need to be returned by Monday, December 20th. Thank you for encouraging your child to help with the Missions.

End of the First Semester

The end of the first semester will be Tuesday, December 21st. Grades will be sent home after the first of the year (January 11th).

We will be serving lunch on Tuesday, December 21st. School will be dismissed at 12:30 PM. There will be NO PM bus.

School will resume on January 4th at 7:55 AM.

Geography Bee

Monday, December 20th at 1:00 PM in the Holy Name Catholic School gym grades 3 - 6 will participate in the Geography Bee. All are invited to attend.

Gifts around the manger

Volunteers from the Midwest Pregnancy Center will be at Holy Name Catholic School on Friday, December 17th at 1:00 PM. The students at Holy Name will present the baby items to the volunteers.

Our Lady of Guadalupe

The feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is on December 12th. This year the students at Holy Name Catholic School will pray a novena at 12:30 in the gym to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe. We will start on Friday, December 3rd and continue the week of December 6th. Everyone is invited to come and pray with the students.

Schwan Delivery

Friday, December 3rd in the parking lot behind the church/school the Schwan truck will be here from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. During that time Schwan orders can be picked up.

First Friday

There will be Adoration and Benediction on Friday, December 3rd after the 8:15 Mass.

Family Math Night

Family Math Night will be on Thursday, December 2 at 6:00 PM in the gym. Make plans to come and play math games with your child. We will end by 6:40 PM so that we can attend the Parish Mission at 7:00 PM.

Regan Institute

Monday, November 22 and Tuesday, November 23 all teachers will attend the Regan Institute in Pittsburg. Each teacher takes classes to renew their religion certification for the Diocese of Wichita.

There will be NO school November 22 - November 26.

Bishop Jackels

The weekend of November 20 & 21st Bishop Michael Jackels will be at Holy Name. He will be speaking at ALL the masses that weekend on the Together Vision.

Thanksgiving Mass

Friday, November 19th students in grades K - 6 will place the canned goods that they brought from home around the altar. Food collected will be given to the Holy Name Parish Food Pantry.

Life Education

Students in grades K - 6 will be participating in Life Education on November 17 or November 19th.

Barnes & Noble

Give the Gift of Literacy To Our School
Barnes and Noble at Bradley Fair, 1920 N. Rock Road – Wichita, is hosting a special book fair fundraiser on November 13, 2010 from 10-6 to help purchase book for our library. The holiday season is approaching – books make perfect gifts for family, friends, teachers, schools! Purchase a book for you, your family, or give a book to our school library- any purchase will support our school. You must mention the bookfair at the register. Our “wish list” will be available at the fair. Proceeds from the book fair will be used to purchase additional library books for our school. Contact Lisa Payne for additional information regarding the bookfair and on-line purchases.

Rosary

The 6th graders will NOT be leading the rosary after the 8:15 AM Mass on Thursday, November 11th.

Mid-term

Mid-term for the 2nd nine weeks is Friday, November 12th. Mid-term grades will be sent home this week.

Schwan

Holy Name Catholic School will participate in the Schwan's fundraiser starting on Monday, November 8th. More information will be sent home next week.

2-day preschool Pictures

On Tuesday, November 9th will be 2-day preschool individual and group pictures.

Picture Retake

Just a reminder....Picture retakes for 3-day preschool and K - 6 will be Tuesday, November 9th. To be able to have a retake -- you must return your original picture package.

Assembly

The Sound Waves, Women's Ensemble and RMS Select Sounds will perform at Holy Name Catholic School on Friday, November 5th at 10:30 AM. All are invited to attend.

Praying the Rosary

The 6th grade class will pray the rosary after the 8:15 AM Mass on Thursday, November 4th. The intention will be.....For the poor souls in purgatory. Please come and pray the rosary with the 6th grade class.

All Souls Day

Students in grades K - 6 will attend Mass at 8:15 AM for All Souls Day.

All Saints Day

Students in grades K - 6 will dress as saints on Monday, November 1st. At the 8:15 AM Mass the students will process in with Father Ben. After Mass students will give short presentations in the gym about the saint they represent. Everyone is invited to attend.

Pizza Hut -- October 25th

Want time away from the kitchen? Let Pizza Hut do all of the work and help
our school at the same time. Enjoy the lunch time buffet, plan to meet friends and family there, take carry-out home or have pizza, pasta and
more delivered.

Just leave your paid receipt in the jar on the counter by the cash register at
Pizza Hut marked for Holy Name School that day or evening. You can also turn
in the receipt by October 31 either to the school office or in the jar at the
church entrance.

Pizza Hut will donate to Holy Name School 20% of the total receipts turned in for October 25.

National Young Readers Week

During the Week of November 8 - 12 we will have "celebrity" readers come to our school and read to the students. We have asked local community members to come to our school and read.

Why is this week "celebrated"?

Children learn to enjoy reading by example. When they see adults whom they admire and look up to reading, your students will be more likely to read for enjoyment, as well.

Meeting people from many different fields helps to reinforce the fact that reading plays an important role in any career a person chooses.

Fall Festival

Holy Name Altar Society will have their annual Fall Festival on Sunday, November 7th. Everyone in the parish and school is invited to attend.

There will be booths set up in the gym and the altar society will be preparing a Chicken and Noodle Dinner. Tickets for the dinner can be purchased at the door.

First Friday

After the 8:15 AM Mass on Friday, November 5 there will be adoration and benediction.

Please come and spend some time with Jesus.

Generations of Faith

Our first Generations of Faith will be on Wednesday, November 3rd at 6:30 PM. HSA will be providing Lasagna that evening. Please bring a side dish. The topic for the evening will be "Stewardship".

Everyone in the parish and school is invited to attend.

Catechesis of the Mass

Saturday, October 16th at 10:00 AM in the gym Father Nolan will present the 2nd part of the Catechesis of the Mass (Hearers of the Word). This series presents workshops on aspects of the celebration of the Holy Eucharist to help deepen our understanding of this sacrament as we prepare for a new translation of the Roman Missal in Advent of 2011.

This workshop, entitled "Hearers of the Word," leads us through the movement of the Liturgy of the Word, reflecting on how we prepare for receiving God's Word and how we respond to the Word proclaimed.

Please join us for this opportunity to reflect on this important part of the Mass.

Rosary

The 6th grade class will be pryaing the rosary on Thursday, October 14th after the 8:15 AM Mass. The intention this week will be....To pray for the unborn. Please come and pray with the 6th graders.

Barnes & Noble Bookfair

Barnes and Noble Bookfair will be Saturday, November 13th at Bradley Fair.

It is an opportunity to purchase a book for our school library. A "wish list" of books from Holy Name Catholic School will be available to choose from or pick one of your favorites!!

If you are unable to attend the bookfair at Barnes & Noble -- books can be purchased on-line.

Holy Name Parish Picnic/Silent Auction

Parish Picnic will be October 17th at 3:00 PM. There will be games, cake walk and a silent auction starting at 3:00 PM. A covered dish dinner will start at 5:00 PM. If you have items for the Silent Auction they may be left at the church office. ALL PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT HOLY NAME CATHOLIC SCHOOL.

Holy Name Catholic School received the Diocesan Standard of Excellence in Religion and Math for the 2009 - 2010 school year.

Shorts

Just a reminder, that navy or khaki shorts (boys/girls) and the navy skort for girls may only be worn during the 1st and 4th nine weeks of school. Friday, October 15th ends the 1st nine weeks.

Red Ribbon Week this year will be October 17 - 22nd. We have different activities scheduled during the week.

Fall Fundraiser

HSA sent home information about the Fall Fundraiser on Thursday, September 23rd. The Fall Fundraiser sales date will be: September 23 - October 6.

A portion of our Fall Fundraiser profits will be used for special projects and needs at Holy Name Catholic School.

The products should be distributed during the week of November 30th. Specific details will be sent home about delivery as soon as more information is given to us from Innisbrook.

Fire Prevention Week this year is October 3 - 9th.

Stewardship Fair

Holy Name Parish will have a Stewardship Fair the weekend of October 9/10. Father John Lanzrath will be at each of the Masses to talk about Stewardship. After each Mass, the parishioners will have an opportunity to go to the gym and visit the different ministry booths.

Holy Name Catholic School will have a "booth" at the fair. Please come and view the DVD that we will have at our booth.

Make plans to attend the Stewardship Fair and learn more about the different ministries that are available at Holy Name Parish.

During the month of October the school children will pray the rosary at 2:15 PM each Friday afternoon.

Evening with the Principal

Evening with the principal will be Thursday, September 30th at 6:30 PM. I will talk about the security system, MAP scores, Powerschool, State Assessments, etc. I will answer any questions that you may have about Holy Name Catholic School.

Rosary

The 6th grade students will lead the rosary after the 8:15 AM Mass on Thursday, September 30th. We will be praying ....That more young men from our parish will answer the call to be priests.

Midterm

Midterm grades will be sent home this week (September 13 - 17).

Altar Server Training

Altar Server training for students in grades 3 - 6 will be Wedneday, September 15th at 9:30 AM.

The 6th grade students will lead the rosary on Thursday, September 16th after the 8:15 AM Mass. We will be praying for our seminarian Zachary Pinaire that he will continue to listen and answer God's call to the priesthood.

Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary

Wednesday, September 8 is the Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary. The 6th graders will have a short prayer service around 10:30 near the school office.

HSA Open House

Open House will be Tuesday, September 21st at the Holy Name Catholic School gym at 7:00 PM. Students in grades K - 6 will have a short music program that evening. This will be a chance to meet the 2010-2011 HSA officers. After the HSA meeting, families will have an opportunity to visit the classrooms.

Midterm

Just a reminder....Midterm will be September 15th. Midterm reports will be sent home for students in grades K - 6.

MAP Testing

MAP testing for grades K - 6 will start the week of September 7 - 17. There will be a schedule sent home next week to let you know when your child will be tested.

Graduation/Promotion Standards -- Raised
Beginning this school year, a student must pass every course and every state and diocesan assessment in order to graduate from a Catholic elementary or secondary school or complete 30 hours of successful remediation.

Attendance (Diocesan Policy Handbook)
Punctual attendance is an act of responsible stewardship by parents and students for their parish's gift of Catholic education. Compulsory education law of Kansas requires students between the ages of 7 and 18 to be in school. Being absent for such reasons as vacations, sporting events, school activities where the student is not a participant, shopping, babysitting, or travel is not acceptable, and parents should not ask for their children to be excused for such reasons.

The Clean Indoor Air Act of 2010 outlaws smoking (pipes, cigars, and cigarettes) in all public buildings, which includes Catholic Schools.

Altar Server Training

Fr. Ben will work with the Altar Servers on Wednesday, September 15th at 9:30 AM in grades 3 - 6. He will begin training the 3rd graders on how to be Altar Servers and review procedures with the other students.

HSA Open House

HSA Open House will be Tuesday, September 21st at 7:00 PM. Students in grades K - 6 will have a short music program that evening.

Virtus

The next Virtus class (Safe Environment Program) that will be at Holy Name Parish will be on Saturday, September 11th. The class will start at 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM. Virtus will be offered in both English (Parish Hall) and Spanish (Library).

Holy Childhood Association

Sister Ursula will be at Holy Name Catholic School on September 8th. She will visit with the students about Holy Childhood Association and missionary work.

Last school year (July 1, 2009 - June 30 , 2010)...Holy Name Catholic School students contributed $1,273.40 to the Holy Childhood Association.

Kiwanis

Members from the Kiwanis club here in Coffeyville will be at Holy Name Catholic School on Friday, August 27th to talk to the students about the Circus that is coming to town.

There will be NO AM/PM bus on Monday, August 16th, Tuesday, August 17th, Wednesday, August 18th.

NCA News Release

Principal Lisa Payne announced today that Holy Name Catholic School earned continuing accreditation from the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), an accreditation division of AdvancED. This action was taken at the AdvancED Accreditation Commission meeting. Holy Name Catholic School has been accredited since March 29, 1995.

NCA CASI provides nationally-recognized accreditation, the purpose of which is continuous school improvement focused on increasing student performance. To earn accreditation, schools must meet NCA CASI’s high standards, be evaluated by a team of professionals from outside the school, and implement a continuous process of school improvement. Accreditation is granted on a five-year term,

“Accreditation demonstrates to our students, parents, and community that we are focused on raising student achievement, providing a safe and enriching learning environment, and maintaining an efficient and effective operation staffed by highly qualified educators,” stated Principal Lisa Payne.

NCA CASI accreditation is recognized across state lines, which not only eases the transfer process as students move from accredited school to accredited school but also assures parents that the school is meeting nationally accepted standards for quality and successful professional practice.

Dr. Mark Elgart, President/CEO of AdvancED, the parent organization of NCA CASI, stated, “NCA CASI Accreditation is a rigorous process that focuses the entire school on the primary goal of creating lifelong learners. Holy Name Catholic School is to be commended for engaging in this process and demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement.”

Students in grades K - 6 will sign yearbooks around 9:15 AM in the gym on May 26th.

Kindergarten Graduation & Awards will be at 10:30 AM in the gym on May 26th.

Awards Assembly for grades 1 - 5 will be at 11:00 AM in the gym on May 26th.

Light of Leadership

The Light of Leadership service will be after the 8:15 AM Mass on Wednesday, May 26th. The 6th grade students will pass the "light" to the 5th grade class.

6th grade Promotion

The 6th gradae promotion will be Tuesday, May 25th at 6:30 PM. There will be a reception after Mass in the gym.

AR Lunch

Our AR celebration lunch for those students that met their AR goal this semester will be on Tuesday, May 25th 11:30 AM. There will only be one lunch period that day.

Schwan Delivery

Just a reminder...There will be two Schwan trucks parked on the blacktop behind the school on Friday, May 7th from 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM.

First Friday

We will have adoration and benediction on Friday, May 7th after the 8:15 AM Mass.

Uniform Meeting

There will be a short uniform meeting on Thursday, May 6th at 3:00 PM in the gym. This meeting is for those students that will be entering Kindergarten or 5th grade parents. There will be sample uniforms available at the meeting.

Power Up Wellness Activity

The 6th grade class has been planning & preparing a wellness activity on Thursday, May 6th for the students at Holy Name Catholic School. The afternoon will start at 1:00 PM with both nutritional activities as well as physical activities for grades K - 6. The afternoon will end at 2:15 PM with a snack for all the students.

Parents are welcome to come and enjoy the afternoon.

Rosary

Holy Name Catholic Students pray the rosary after the 8:15 AM Mass each Thursday. The intention for the month of May is....Pray for our seminarians who are presently preparing for Holy Orders.

Generations of Faith

Just a reminder...Generations of Faith will be Wednesday, May 5th at 6:30 PM. HSA will be preparing tacos. Bring a side dish and then the evening will end with build your own ice cream sundae.

Antique Cars

Wednesday, May 5th at 10:30 AM (weather permitting)the students will have an opportunity to see some Antique cars. There is a group from Coffeyville and surrounding area that will come and park their car on the blacktop for the students to see. If it rains that day...they will come on Thursday, May 6th at 10:30.

Parents are invited to come and view the antique cars.

Free Dress Day

Those students who had sold their first 30 carnival tickets and turned in money by Friday, April 9th received a "free" free dress day coupon which was sent home on Tuesday, April 13th.

Present this coupon on Monday, April 26th to participate in Free Dress Day at no charge.

If you would like to participate in Free Dress Day and did not get a "Free" dress coupon, you may still participate in free dress day for $2.00. The $2.00 will go towards the Holy Childhood Association Mission fund.

Jesus knows and loves each one of us just like a shepherd with his sheep; he is the Good Shepherd who came to care for us and show us the way to everlasting happiness.

The Risen Christ gives all people a new hope. It is truly a time for rejoicing. Father Ben has decided to have Stations of the Cross inside the Church on Friday (April 2nd). He will not need the school children to hold the Stations of the Cross Posters since the Stations of the Cross will be in the Church.

Palm Sunday -- The Passion

This week we walk with Jesus through his passion, death, and resurrection. We begin to experience the sacrifice he made for us and how we are also called to give our life for others. Catholic Relief Services' Operation Rice Bowl has helped us walk with our sisters and brothers who daily take up the cross of poverty. Through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving we unite ourselves in the one human family that is God's creation.

Fifth Week of Lent

The Lenten call to repentance is matched by the overwhelming compassion and forgiveness of God. The story of the woman caught in adultery shows us that Jesus does not want to condemn us, but rather to place us on the path to a new life. Our prayer, fasting, learning, and giving with Catholic Relief Services' Operation Rice Bowl opens paths to new life for our brothers and sisters in need.

Fourth Week of Lent - The Prodigal Son

The story of the Prodigal Son helps us refocus on the meaning of Lent. This is a time to change our ways, to turn back to God our Father, and to appreciate and share the gifts we have received. As we begin the second half of our journey with Catholic Relief Services' Operation Rice Bowl, we remember that we are called to be stewards of what God has given us, and we connect our prayers and fasting with our giving.

Congratulations

The 6th grade students received a First Place ribbon for their vocation banner on Thursday, March 4, 2010. They attended Vocation Day at St. Patrick's school in Parsons.

Third Week of Lent - The Burning Bish and the Call of Moses

Today we hear the call of Moses to lead his people from oppression to freedom. God promises to be with them as they journey to a new life. Our participation in Catholic Relief Services' Operation Rice Bowl unites us in prayer, fasting, and giving with the millions of people throughout the world who are oppressed by poverty, injustice, war, disease, and lack of education and other opportunities.

There will be a Virtus class on Saturday, March 27th at 9:00 AM in the Parish Hall.

Second Week of Lent -- The Transfiguration

Jesus' transfiguration was a moment of hope for the disciples, giving them the strength to endure the future sacrifices they would make as they formed the early Church. As we continue our journey with Catholic Relief Services' Operation Rice Bowl, let us be mindful that our Lenten sacrifices help to give hope to our brothers and sisters in need.

Tuesday, March 9th at 7:00 PM is the Band Recital at Holy Name Catholic School Gym.

Shorts

Friday, March 5th ends the third nine weeks. Starting on Monday, March 8th, students may wear uniform shorts and the girls may wear the navy skorts.

Please keep in mind that shorts and pants do not have to be purchased at Nado Alley. However, they must follow the guidelines that have been established. Keep this in mind when purchasing Navy or Khaki pants/shorts. They must match the color at NADO ALLEY.

Adoration and Benediction

On Friday, March 5th there will be Adoration and Benediction after the 8:15 AM Mass.

Stations of the Cross

Each Friday during Lent the students pray the Stations of the Cross at 2:15 PM.

"Walking in Sisters Shoes"

During the offertory on Friday, March 5th one student from each class will take the money that has been contributed to the "Walking in Sisters Shoes" and place it in front of the altar.

Vocation Day

The 6th grade class will be going to St. Patrick's school in Parsons on Thursday, March 4th for Vocation Day.

Rosary

During the month of March the prayer intention for the rosary will be "Pray that more young men from our parish will answer God's call to the Priesthood."

The students pray the rosary each Thursday morning after the 8:15 AM Mass.

NCA Visit

I would like to thank our School Council members and our student group that was part of our NCA visit on Wednesday, February 10th. The NCA team did an Exit report at the end of the day. We were told that they would be recommending accreditation for Holy Name Catholic School. We are waiting on our final report back from the NCA team.

Seminarians Education

Holy Name Catholic School sent $194.00 to help with the education of the Seminarians from the "Free Dress" that we had during Catholic Schools Week.

American Red Cross

The students presented the American Red Cross with a check in the amount of $195.60 from the aluminum cans that were recycled during Catholic Schools Week.

Wednesday, February 10, 2010 our QAR team will be at Holy Name Catholic School. They will be reviewing our school profile data and Standards Assessment Report. Holy Name has completed another cycle with North Central Accreditation. This visit will determine our accreditation for another cycle with North Central.

During this visit, they will visit with our School Council members, students, and faculty/staff. Our QAR team will be at Holy Name Catholic School most of the day on February 10th.

As indicated on the school calendar, there will be NO school on Wednesday, February 10th.
